What It Takes to Become a Homeowner
Buying a home is one of the biggest and most exciting decisions you can make. While the process can feel overwhelming at first, it becomes much more manageable when you understand what’s actually needed.
Key Things Most Buyers Need
- A credit score of 620 or higher (some programs allow lower)
- Stable income for at least the past 2 years
- Manageable debt levels
- Funds available for a down payment (as low as 3% for many buyers)
- Money set aside for closing costs
Special financing options are also available for ITIN and DACA applicants, though requirements may differ.
It’s highly recommended to get pre-approved and understand what you qualify for *before* you start seriously looking at homes. This helps you shop with confidence and avoid falling in love with a home that’s out of reach.
